Use component cables to connect my cable box to the Rocket and HDMI cable to connect to my TV. I still get full HD and, with a 32 gig thumb drive plugged in, I can record 4 to 5 hours of HD video just by pushing the big red button. I have done video recording for years so I already knew and expected that, 6 Gig an hour is about 15 meg a second data rate. If you want to have good volume on your audio track, you will need to install the Hauppauge Capture program on your computer and adjust the “game audio” setting up as high as it will go.

The Rocket is SMALL, easy to use, and works great. Also, if you want to simply cut out the commercials from your recordings WITHOUT re-encoding the files, buy a program called SolveigMM Video Splitter. My wife recorded the series “The people v. OJ Simpson” and it took me only a couple of hours to remove ALL the commercial from ALL 10 episodes. I have been in IT for a long time and have even done some beta testing and this software definitely needs beta testing.

When I received my Hauppauge HDPVR2 the first the problems, in the edit feature there are many design flaws such as the default location of your videos being in the public folder. The delete function not using the recycle bin, which means if you accidently delete a video you’re screwed. Then there is the constant freezing and crashing. I figured out some of the reasons it crashes and freezes but since the folks at Hauppauge stopped all correspondence when I inquired about the crashes I could not give them what I have learned about the crashing and freezing. For instance, if your source video changes resolution the software will freeze or crash. Had they properly beta tested the equipment for uses other than gaming they most likely could have fixed the issues anyway. I sincerely hope that Hauppauge continues to refine their software.

Hardware encoding is the way to go and would be a shame to see this technology go to waste for lack of a little refinement and it is for that reason I gave 3 stars instead of 1. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. There was a problem loading comments right now. I use it to cap TV shows and movies off my DirecTV Genie, and this unit does a great job. I have it recording at 1920 x 1080, 60i, and the recordings look great. I purchased Kernel Labs’s HDPVRCapture, which is reasonably priced and works very well. I used this system to capture video from my DirecTV Receiver and, using an HDMI Splitter, I was even able to connect my Roku 3 Player to bypass HDCP protection.

I thought about giving the Hauppauge 4 stars because it isn’t the easiest system to set up, but the performance is so good it really does rate 5 stars. I had to read the instructions several times before I clearly understood the setup procedures. Overall it also took me about an hour to set up. Once you know how to do it, however, you should be able to set up, install the software and connect the system in under a half-hour. The system doesn’t come with an installed CD, you must download the software from the Hauppauge web site.

It was also a little disconcerting to hook the Hauppauge hardware up but not see any video. You must complete the software installation on your PC before the video is connected. However, once I finished this set, the video popped right in. As for performance, the Hauppauge PVR is all that is advertised. I can now view and capture video from either my DirecTV receiver or from my Roku.
